Adopt Sweater (In Foster) a All Black Domestic Shorthair / Mixed Breed (Medium)

Location:
Fishers, IN
Description:

Hi, Sweater here (my foster calls me Binx) with a personal update to anyone looking to adopt a good boy who is just a little rough around the edges. You see, I was found as a stray kitten last spring and spent my formative months really frightened at the Humane Society. They repeatedly described me as "terrified" and I spent a great deal of time hiding under my bed. The place was just so crowded and loud and I had no real experience with people that didn't feel chaotic and scary. When my foster mom asked for "whoever has the greatest needs" they brought me to see her. But I wouldn't come out, I was too scared and I didn't feel well. She felt that I just needed a quiet place to learn how to trust, relax, and be a cat, so she took me home. I required a lot of patience and I hid from her for weeks. But she would know where I was and cautiously lean down to pet me. I couldn't help but purr! I really liked being petted but I didn't trust it, so I bit and scratched A LOT! To be honest, I still do. Foster mom says I get overstimulated easily. Just a couple of pets and then I want to bite/scratch/play HARD. But she will immediately say, "No thank you, Sir." and stop, so I sometimes bat with my claws retracted to try and be more gentle. I'm still learning! It took months for me to understand that I did not need to hiss at everything and arch my back and run away. I've mostly stopped that now, but I still get scared really easily. I prefer the quiet, and the unexpected loud noise takes a while for me to recover from. Learning how to be a lap cat is hard when you've come from the streets! That said, I do want to know where foster mom is at all times and will sometimes follow her around the house. She says I'm a good eater and excellent at potty skills! I once locked myself in a bedroom for hours and had no accidents. She also says I'm great at fetching. That's right! Our record is 42 throws/fetches. I'm also really good at hiding my toys under appliances. We've been working on letting my foster mom hold me for brief periods. I love it, and purr loudly while she assures me in a low voice that I'm a good boy, but I cannot handle more than a few seconds without needing to be let go. What can I say? I'm a work in progress! I probably would not do well in a house with children as I am still too easily scared and anything unexpected gets a "fight or flight response" still. And I definitely would not do well in a house with small animals or birds. Foster mom recently figured out I have an intense prey drive...especially with birds and anything that scurries. I told her that was how I stayed alive on the mean streets as a wee kitten and my favorite pastime is plotting how to get to the doves who have nested on the porch. I may or may not do well with another cat, I don't know-I've never been socialized in that way. I've got some newer pics from foster life. As you can see, I'm a big, handsome boy now. I have nice long legs, a white belly, and I enjoy being brushed for short periods of time. I'm not always great at entertaining myself (though I do like to play with my toys) I prefer the entertainment of humans. If I don't get the attention I want, I am vocal about it (though not excessively so). I am still a young boy, so I will try and get your attention by scratching the furniture (or showing off my Zoomies skills). Foster mom says I'm attention-seeking in that way. She's not wrong, but also, I have long sharp claws and I don't like the cardboard scratchy thing. The furniture is more satisfying to me. So, if you're in the market for a project and you have a nice quiet home conducive to helping a guy who is really doing his best and just needs a lot of time, patience, and support-I might be the one for you! Foster mom loves me a lot and wants me to be placed in the right home for my needs. She says that it's not my fault I was so traumatized and I just need extra love and understanding and I'll be the bestest boy someday. So what do you think? Are you my perfect match?
